What is Salt Spray Testing?
Salt spray testing is a type of accelerated corrosion test used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of materials and coatings. The test involves exposing test specimens to a highly corrosive salt spray environment, which simulates the harsh conditions that materials and coatings may be subjected to in real-world applications, such as marine and automotive environments.
During the test, the test specimens are placed in a chamber that is filled with a saltwater solution that is continuously sprayed onto the specimens using a misting nozzle. The specimens are typically made of metal or coated with a metallic or non-metallic coating, and they are evaluated for signs of corrosion, such as rust or discoloration, over a specified period.
The results of the salt spray test can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the materials and coatings in protecting against corrosion and to determine if they meet industry or regulatory standards for corrosion resistance. The test is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and construction, where materials and coatings are exposed to harsh environmental conditions and must remain durable and reliable over time.

What is Salt Corrosion Test?
Salt corrosion Test: This is a test that assesses the ability of a material to withstand exposure to salt and salt solutions, which can cause corrosion. The test involves subjecting the material to a salt spray for a set period and then observing the extent of corrosion that occurs.
What is Cyclic Salt Spray and Humidity Test?
Cyclic Salt Spray and Humidity Test: This is a test that combines exposure to salt spray and humidity cycling to simulate harsh environmental conditions. The test involves subjecting the material to salt spray and alternating humidity levels, which can cause corrosion and other damage to the material.
What is Salt Spray Humidity Test?
Salt Spray Humidity Test: This is a test that assesses the resistance of a material to corrosion when exposed to salt spray and high humidity. The test involves subjecting the material to a salt spray and high-humidity environment for a set period and then observing the extent of corrosion that occurs.
What is Salt Fog Test?
Salt Fog test: This is a test that assesses the resistance of a material to corrosion when exposed to a fog of salt solution. The test involves subjecting the material to a fog of salt solution for a set period and then observing the extent of corrosion that occurs.
What is Mixed Gas Test?
Mixed Gas test: Mixed gas testing is a type of environmental testing used to evaluate the resistance of materials and coatings to corrosive gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). These gases can cause significant damage to equipment and materials in certain industrial and geographic areas. In mixed gas testing, samples are exposed to a controlled environment containing a mixture of these corrosive gases, as well as humidity, temperature, and other conditions relevant to the specific application. The test evaluates the materials’ resistance to the mixed gas environment and can be used to identify potential areas of weakness or to evaluate the effectiveness of protective coatings or other materials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Salt spray testing, commonly referred to as salt fog or salt corrosion testing, is an accelerated environmental simulation used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metals, paints, and protective surface coatings. By exposing test specimens to a continuous, high-saline environment within a controlled chamber, technicians can simulate years of harsh coastal, marine, or automotive atmospheric stress in a compressed timeframe.
BE Analytic’s testing laboratory provides a broad array of specialized corrosion validation services to cover diverse product requirements. These include standard Salt Corrosion Testing, Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) Testing, Salt Fog Testing, Salt Spray Humidity Testing, and advanced Cyclic Salt Spray and Humidity Testing, which combines salt exposure with alternating moisture levels to mimic real-world weather patterns.
To ensure your products remain universally compliant and market-ready, tests are carried out according to strict national and international specifications. Common frameworks supported at our facility include ASTM B117, MIL-STD-810F, IEC 60068-2-11, IEC 60068-2-52, IS 9000 (Part 2), JSS 55555, and JIS Z 2731.
Any industry that deploys equipment in rugged, high-humidity, or marine environments utilizes salt spray validation to minimize the risk of premature field failures. Key sectors include aerospace systems, defence hardware, automotive electronics, outdoor telecommunications equipment, marine infrastructure, and industrial coatings.
